MORGANTOWN, WV - The University at Buffalo men’s soccer team took on its second consecutive BIG EAST opponent Sunday afternoon, coming away with a 0-0 tie against West Virginia following two extra sessions. With both Buffalo and West Virginia finishing with identical 1-0-1 records, the Bulls were named the 2006 WVU Shootout Champions based on a 2-1 total goal differential.

"The result was a fair result," Head Coach John Astudillo said. "West Virginia plays a very direct and high-flying game and our backfield did great to counterattack that. It is quite an accomplishment and one has to credit the fitness of the players."

West Virginia, a 2005 NCAA College Cup Tournament participant, managed to push the Bulls early on, testing senior goalkeeper Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) with three shots on goal in the first half. The UB offense experienced early frustrations, gathering only three shots and inflicting 10 fouls in the half.

The second half would prove to be another endurance battle, as both teams could not find the back of the net. West Virginia attacked the UB zone often, but the backfield played strong once again despite being outshot by a 23-10 margin in the game and allowing a 10-1 corner kick differential.

Buffalo was led by Bell, who made eight saves in 120:00 minutes between the pipes in the shutout. Offensively, senior Andrae Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica) and sophomore Jon Martin (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) led the way with one shot on goal each. The Mountaineers were led by goalkeeper Nick Noble with two saves in his second straight shutout and Jyler Noviello, who rifled four shots on goal.

Dave Chojnowski (Rochester, NY/Hilton), Dan Gwyther (London, England/Woodcote), Erik Jaanimagi (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta), and Dan Stevens (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) were among the notables named to the 2006 WVU Shootout All-Tournament team, with Gwyther taking home top honors as the Tournament MVP.

The Bulls (1-0-1) return home to UB Stadium Friday night, where they will kick off their home schedule against Detroit in the first game of the annual UB Fall Classic. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
