Men's Soccer Projected To Place Third In Preseason Poll
2005 MAC Champion Akron was slated to capture the regular season and tournament titles, followed by Northern Illinois, Buffalo, Western Michigan, Bowling Green, and IPFW. Last season, the Bulls were picked in the preseason to finish last. In posting a school-record 14-3-2 record, 18-year head coach John Astudillo is steadily preparing this year's squad for the 2006 season.
"To me, 2005 is history," Coach Astudillo said. "If we integrate the cohesiveness, leadership and hard work that the team built up last season into this year's team, we will do quite well."
The Bulls return 15 players, including seven starters, from last year's team and welcome the arrival of 10 newcomers. Leading the charge for a consecutive MAC Championship appearance are the three captains, senior goalkeeper Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame), senior forward Andrae Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton), and junior forward Lee Catchpole (Norwich, England/Bungay). Bell, UB's all-time leader in career wins (23) and total wins in a season (14), ranked 11th in Division I in GAA (0.65) last season. Clarke and Catchpole, both All-MAC second team selections last season, return after combining for 53 of the team's 142 total points in 2005. Clarke led the team with 11 assists, ranking ninth in the nation with 0.58 assists per game and was named second team NSCAA/adidas All-New York Region and third team National Team of the Season.
Having not played two games in the month of August since 1997, UB hits the road for its first two games of the 2006 season against BIG EAST opponents Pittsburgh and West Virginia in the West Virginia University Tournament on Aug. 25-27. The first home contest is scheduled for Sept. 1, when the team welcomes Detroit to UB Stadium for the first game of the UB Fall Classic. |
