BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo men's soccer player Lee Catchpole (Norwich, England/Bungay) will represent his home country of England in the 2005 World University Games, being held from August 11-21 in Izmir, Turkey.

"Lee is a hard-working forward who always has his nose in the action, and that fits England's team," said UB head coach John Astudillo. "To get this kind of a chance at such an early age, after just his freshman season, is an incredible opportunity for Lee. He'll have a great chance to participate in the 2007 World University Games as well, and the international experience he gets will certainly help him immensely. It gives me great, great pleasure to see one of our own making a name in international soccer."

Catchpole is a member of England's 16-player World University Games roster, and he also represented his country in an indoor tournament played in Romania in June. He is the third UB soccer player to participate in a World University Games. Anthony Wright (1994-95) represented Australia in the 1993 Games held in Buffalo and in the 1995 Games held in Fukuoka, Japan, and Charles Kadiri (1994-95) represented Nigeria in the 1991 Games held in Sheffield, England.

Catchpole is coming off an outstanding freshman campaign at UB during which he was named the team's Top Newcomer and to the Mid-American Conference All-Tournament Team and the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America)/adidas All-New York Region Third Team. Despite missing the last seven games of the regular season due to an ankle injury, Catchpole led the Bulls in both goals (six) and points (14) on the season. He returned to the lineup for the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament and scored both goals in a 2-1 Buffalo win over Northern Illinois that advanced the Bulls to the semifinals for the first time since the 2000 season.

The World University Games are open to student-athletes between the ages of 17 and 28 who have not been out of college or its equivalent for more than one year. The Games are an international sporting and cultural festival held every two years in a different city around the world, second only to the Olympics.
