Dan Bell Named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar
Bell, who graduated with a degree in political science, finished with a 3.66 cumulative grade point average and was named the Clifford C. Furnas Award winner this past year, UB's highest academic award given to a student-athlete. Bell played and started in goal in all but one of UB's 19 games this past season. He logged 1621:46 minutes in net and allowed only 16 goals. He had a 0.89 goals against average and recorded eight shutouts on the year. Bell is UB's all-time wins leader with 33 victories. Bell is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honors Society and an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.’s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, Diverse: Issues In Higher Education established the Sports Scholar Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination. To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2 and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
