Men's Soccer Announces 2006 Award Winners
Receiving awards along with Bell from head coach John Astudillo and his coaching staff were junior Dan Stevens (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), sophomore Dan Gwyther (London, England/Woodcote), and senior Andrae Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica/DeWitt Clinton).
Bell was honored with both the Coaches' Award and the 2007 Clifford C. Furnas Post-Graduate Scholarship award. Bell was named the Furnas Award Winner at the annual Academic Awards Banquet held on April 19 after being recognized for outstanding undergraduate performance in scholarship and athletic prowess. Bell also held a minimum 3.5 GPA and has committed to graduate study. Bell led the Bulls between the pipes to a 24-10-4 record over the last two seasons. This past fall, Bell had a 0.89 goals against average and an .807 save percentage, being named to the Mid-American Conference First Team and Academic All-MAC team. Bell leaves UB as the the all-time winningest goalkeeper in school history with 33 career wins.
Stevens made an immediate impact after transferring to UB this season as he led the MAC with seven assists in his first season, earning him Top Newcomer. Stevens came to UB from Oneonta State and was instrumental in a stretch of four games in which he had recorded at least one assist, three of those games generating in wins. Stevens followed up the streak with the game-winning goal against Bowling Green on Oct. 6. Stevens was named to the All-MAC Second Team and MAC All-Tournament Team.
Gwyther, named Top Newcomer last season, was named Most Improved by the coaching staff after leading a young core of defenders this past season, thus earning him a spot on the All-MAC Second Team. Gwyther and the rest of the UB backfield generated eight shutouts, with one of those coming in the second game of the season against national powerhouse West Virginia at the WVU Shootout in August. Gwyther also scored his first and only collegiate goal in a 2-1 win over Pittsburgh at the same tournament, catapulting the London product to tournament MVP honors. Clarke earned the Most Outstanding award after concluding his UB career as one of the best. Clarke led the team with eight goals and 18 points, becoming the third player in UB history to lead the team in both goals and points in three seasons. In UB's 5-1 win over Valparaiso on Sept. 10, Clarke scored the team's first hat trick since 1998. He also was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week on Oct. 23 after scoring the game-winning goal against nationally-ranked Northern Illinois on Senior Day. His achievements allowed him to be drafted 21st overall by the Philadelphia KiXX of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) on March 9. In light of his stellar season, Clarke was named to the MAC All-Tournament team, All-MAC first team, and All-Great Lakes Region team.
The Bulls finish the 2006 season with a 10-7-2 record, tied for the sixth best record in UB men’s soccer history. |
