Men's Soccer Announces 2002 Award Winners

Diarra, Stuczynski, Seymour, Wozniak and Peplinski earn honors

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's soccer team handed out its season-ending awards at the annual UB Athletic Awards Banquet on April 29 at Samuel's Grande Manor in Clarence.

Receiving awards from head coach John Astudillo and his staff were freshman Cheick Diarra (Hillsborough, NJ/John Bartram), freshman Matt Stuczynski (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) senior Jason Seymour (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem), senior Brian Wozniak (Canton, MI/Plymouth Salem) and senior Mike Peplinski (Syracuse, NY/Liverpool).

Diarra and Stuczynski were named the team's Top Newcomers after they both had impressive freshman campaigns. Diarra was one of the Bulls top defenders. He finished the 2002 campaign tied for second on the team with two assists. One of his assists came in the Bulls' 2-1 win over Marshall on October 6. Stuczynski was also a solid defender. He played in all 16 games and started six.

Seymour, also a defender, was named the team's Most Improved Player. The senior started all 16 games and registered one assist. His assist set up the first goal in the Bulls' 2-1 win over Sacred Heart on September 1.

Wozniak earned the Coach's Award. The senior goalkeeper made 62 saves and posted a 1.81 goals against average. A co-captain in 2002, Wozniak finished his career at UB with the third-best goals against average is school history (1.59).

Peplinski earned Most Valuable Player honors after registering four goals and two assists in 2002. The senior midfielder started all 16 games and scored the game-winning goals in the Bulls' 2-1 win over Sacred Heart on September 1 and on a penalty kick in UB's 2-1 win over Marshall on October 6. A co-captain in 2002, Peplinski was named to the NSCAA All-New York Region First Team.

Men's soccer finished the season 6-9-1 overall and 3-3-0 in the MAC.
