Men's Soccer Hands Out Yearly Awards
Four Bulls are recognized for their contributions
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's soccer team handed out its yearly awards at UB’s annual Athletic Awards Banquet, which was held at the Millennium Hotel Tuesday night. Head coach John Astudillo and his staff recognized two seniors, a junior, and a freshman as their yearly award winners.
Senior Cheick Diarra (Hillsborough, NJ/John Bartram) was named the team's Most Valuable Player, while fellow senior defensmen Andrew Butler (Yorkshire, England/Mirfield) was given the Coaches' Award. Most Improved Player was awarded to junior Greg Galemore (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) and the team's Top Newcomer for 2004 was freshman Lee Catchpole (Norwich, England/Bungay).
 | | Cheick Diarra | Diarra, who was the only Buffalo player to make the All-Mid-American Conference team, was the staple of the Bulls' defense all season, assisting in four shutouts and seven games where the Bulls only allowed one goal. Diarra had two goals, including the game-tying score against nationally-ranked Binghamton, as well as one assist. Diarra was also named to the All-Tournament team of the UB Fall Classic. Diarra was one of two Bulls to start every game this season.
 | | Andrew Butler | Butler, who was a key contributor to the Bulls' defense along with Diarra, played in all 18 games for Buffalo this past season. He was named to the All-MAC Tournament team after Buffalo upset the third-seeded Northern Illinois Huskies before falling to Akron in the semifinals. Butler also joined Diarra on the All-Tournament team of the UB Fall Classic. Butler finished the seaseon with two assists, while leading the Buffalo defense in shots with 14.
 | | Greg Galemore | Galemore, who also started all 18 games for the Bulls, tallied two assists on the season which were both in a 4-0 victory over Siena. This is the first time as a member of the Bulls that Galemore has started every game in a season.
 | | Lee Catchpole | Despite missing the last seven regular season games because of an ankel injury, Catchpole led the Bulls in goals (6) and points (14). Catchpole scored all three goals for the Bulls in the MAC Tournament, which earned him a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Catchpole was named to the All-New York Region Third Team and was also named MAC Player of the Week after scoring game-winning goals in consecutive games against Rider and St. Francis (PA).
The Bulls finished the 2004 season with an 8-8-2 record, a seven win improvment from 2003. The improvement was the 17th best improvement in the nation.
