Men's Soccer Hands Out Yearly Awards
Record-breaking Bulls honored with Athletic Director's Team Award
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's soccer team announced its yearly awards for the 2005 season at UB's annual Athletic Awards Banquet, which was held at the Millenium Hotel Tuesday night. Head Coach John Astudillo and his staff recognized four individuals with awards, while the team as whole was honored with the Athletic Director's Team Award for its accomplishments in the past season.
Senior Mbwana Johnson (San Fernando, Trinidad & Tobago/Pleasentville) received the team's Most Outstanding Player award, while fellow senior Greg Galemore (Rochester, NY/West Morris) earned the Coaches' Award. Senior defender Matt Stuczynski (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) was honored with Most Improved, and freshman Dan Gwyther (London, England/Woodcote) was named as the team's Top Newcomer.
 Mbwana Johnson |
Johnson played and started in all 19 games for the Bulls and was a mainstay in the UB defense that allowed only 12 goals all season. Known for his aggressive presence, Johnson earned a spot on the All-MAC first team, as he assisted in nine team shutouts including three straight en route to the team's first-ever appearence in the MAC Championship game. Johnson also received NSCAA New York All-Region second team honors.
 Greg Galemore |
Galemore posted career-best numbers with five goals, seven assists, and 17 points while leading the Bulls to their best record in team history. Appearing and starting in all 19 games, he finished the season tied for sixth all-time for assists in a single season. His three assists in Buffalo's 7-0 win against Centenary placed him in second place for assists in a single game. Galemore, who won the team's Most Improved Player award in 2004, also claimed a spot on the NSCAA New York All-Region third team as well as the MAC All-Tournament team.
 Matt Stuczynski |
Stuczynski started in all 19 games this past season and, along with Johnson, was a key contributor in the Bulls' "iron curtain" backfield. Named to the MAC All-Tournament team, Stuczynski enjoyed his best season as a Bull, posting two goals, two assists, and six points, all career bests. Stuczynski scored on his first shot of the season in UB's 5-0 rout over Cleveland State to win the Bulls Classic tournament in September, taking home the Most Valuable Defensive Player in the process.
 Dan Gwyther |
Gwyther made an immediate impact for the Bulls defense, as he started in all 18 games in which he appeared in. Honored by College Soccer News as one of the top freshmen "making an impact" in Division I soccer during week two of the season, Gwyther notched his first and only assist of the season in UB's 3-0 shutout win against Siena.
Under the direction of 17th-year head coach John Astudillo, the Bulls advanced to the MAC Championship game for first time in school history, falling to third-ranked Akron in a shootout, after playing to a scoreless tie through two overtimes. UB, whose 5.5 game improvement was the 10th best turnaround in the nation last season, ranked as high as 20th in the nation. It was the first time in team history that they were ranked. For these accomplishments, the men's soccer team was honored with the Athletic Director's Team award.
The Bulls begin the 2006 season with the West Virginia University Tournament on Aug. 25 against Pittsburgh.
