UB's Bell Named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar
Junior goalkeeper honored by Diverse Issues in Higher Education
Daniel Bell | BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo men's soccer goalkeeper Daniel Bell (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame) was honored with the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award by Diverse: Issues In Higher Education magazine Monday for outstanding academic and athletic achievement. Bell was one of 13 men's soccer players from around the nation to be named to the first team.
Bell, a junior political science major, has a 3.59 cumulative grade point average. He played and started in goal in all 19 games this season for the Bulls, which included a berth in the Mid-American Conference Championship game for the first time since joining the MAC in 1998. He logged a career high 1652:00 minutes in net and allowed only 12 goals. His 0.65 GAA was 11th best in the nation, while posting nine shutout victories. He was second in the Mid-American Conference in save percentage (.821), GAA (0.65) and shutouts. With his 14 wins this past season, Bell claimed the UB record for wins in a single season and is now the all-time leader in wins (23) for men’s soccer. Bell is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honors Society and an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, Diverse: Issues In Higher Education established the Sports Scholar Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination. To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate; maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
