Bulls Stun Michigan State in OpenerBUFFALO, NY - Brian McCallion, who was thwarted on a breakaway in the first overtime, stole a clearing pass and fed Steve Butcher for the game's only goal with 13:49 remaining in the second overtime Tuesday as the University of Buffalo men's soccer team opened its season with a 1-0 victory over visiting Michigan State. Butcher, a junior and graduate of North Tonawanda High School, was 11th in NCAA Division I last year in scoring with 36 points (16 goals and four assists). Four minutes into the first 15-minute extra session, Spartan goalie T. J. Lieckfelt got his hands on an 18-yard blast from McCallion, who broke in all alone. However, in the second session, McCallion, a sophomore from Ballston Lake, chased down an errant clearing pass by Lieckfelt and fed Butcher, who re-directed the pass into the net for the winner. UB goalie Jim Schoenberg, a senior from Somers, had seven saves for the winners. Schoenberg started the first eight games for the Bulls last season before suffering a season-ending jaw injury. UB had four shots on goal, Michigan State, eight. The game was the season opner for both teams. The Bulls, who play in the VMI Tournament this weekend, are not at home again until Sept. 22,
when they host St. Francis (Pa.).
