Griffs Butchered By Bulls

University at Buffalo forward Steve Butcher (North Tonawanda, NY-North Tonawanda) scored three goals and added an assist as the Bulls men's soccer team improved to 6-1 Wednesday night with a 4-3 win over Canisius College (2-3) at the Griffs' Demske Sports Complex.

The Bulls Tim Songer (Liverpool, NY-Liverpool) started the game's scoring at 8:27 when he took a Butcher feed from the right sideline and ripped it into the right corner past Canisius goalie John Ford (West Elmira-Elmira Free).

Canisius battled back and tied the game in the 26th minute when Eric Marsh (Webster-Finger Lakes CC) received a feed from Ryan Puntiri (Plymouth, Ma-South) and scored from point blank range following a misplay by Bulls' netminder Jim Schoenberg (Somers, NY- Somers).

UB went back up 2-1 in the 35th minute when Butcher scored after a scramble in front of the Griffs goal. Butcher scored again to make it 3-1 in the 58th minute when he broke past the Canisius defense and scored on the breakaway.

Canisius came back five minutes later to make it 3-2 when Puntiri found Marsh on a crossing pass. Marsh, who led the nation's junior colleges in goals last season, has four this season for Canisius.

Butcher made it 4-2 at 73:59 when John Shannon (Clifton Park, NY-Shenendehowa) lofted a pass into the Griffs zone and the junior dribbled it home before beating Ford.

Not to be outdone, Canisius responded 47 seconds later. Puntiri recorded his third assist of the game and sixth of the season when he led a three on one break against Schoenberg. Charlie Williams (Webster, NY-Webster) was the beneficiary and Canisius trailed 4-3 with 15 minutes to play.

The Bulls outshot Canisius 16-11. Schoenberg recorded four saves, while Ford had three for Canisius. Both teams were whistled for 20 fouls.
