North Carolina Beats Bulls

CHAPEL HILL, NC - The North Carolina Tar Heels, one of college basketball’s all-time best programs, defeated the UB Bulls 98-49 Tuesday night at Chapel Hill, NC. UNC was coming of its first loss of the season and improved to 9-1 with the win while UB fell to 3-4 on the season.

Buffalo stayed close early, taking a 15-14 lead on a Nikolai Alexeev (Minsk, Belarus/Belarus Sports Academy) three-pointer with 12:02 remaining. But the Tar Heels went on a 13-0 run to take a 27-15 lead on Brendon Haywood's two foul shots with 8:42 left. A Maliso Libomi (Malikoff, France/Academie De Creteil) layup pulled Buffalo within 10, before North Carolina finished the half with a 13-4 spurt. The Tar Heels held Buffalo to 26 percent (8-of-31) shooting in the first half and opened a 40-21 halftime lead.

North Carolina exploded in the second half, outscoring the Bulls, 58-28. The Tar Heels put the game out of reach early in the second half, using a 25-3 run burst to push their lead to 65-24 on Haywood's jumper with 11:36 to play. North Carolina opened its biggest lead at 91-39 in the final two minutes.

The Bulls shot just 29 percent (18-of-63) and were outrebounded, 60-24, including a 22-10 margin on the offensive boards. Maliso Libomi had a career high 12 points for Buffalo (3-4), who faced their first ACC opponent since losing at Clemson in the 1976-77 season. Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) had eight points and Malik Winn (Yonkers, NY/St. Raymond’s) had a career high seven points. Brendon Haywood led UNC with 20 points and Ademola Okulaja added 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Tar Heels.
