Ball State Holds Off Bulls

BUFFALO, NY -The UB mens' basketball team saw a late rally fall short for the second straight game as the Ball State Cardinals hit some key shots and free throws down the stretch for a 64-58 win over the Bulls in front of 1,013 at Alumni Arena.

Trailing by three, 33-30, at halftime, the Bulls (4-15, 0-8) scored the first two buckets after the break for their first lead of the game. Ball State (11-5, 4-3) came back to tie the game at 34-34 before two free throws by Will Campbell (Elimira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) gave UB the lead by two. Ball State then climbed back for a brief lead, 39-38, but the Bulls charged back and tied the game on a free throw by Will Campbell and took their last lead of the game on a jumper by Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) and a 41-39 UB lead with 13:31 remaining.

The Cardinals then scored five unanswered points to push the lead back up to three points. Louis Campbell then hit a three-pointer for three of his game-high 21 points to cut the lead back to one, 47-46, with 8:14 left. BSU then used a 6-0 run to push the lead to seven and kill the Bulls rally. The Cardinals hit six free throws in the final minute of play to end any late comeback hopes and hold on for the 64-58 victory.

The Bulls never led in the first half of action, falling behind 6-0 in the first three and a half minutes of play and BSU's Duane Clements scored five of his team high 14 points during that run. The Cardinals led by as many as nine points on two occassions. The Bulls used a 9-3 run over the last three minutes of the first half to make it a 33-30 game at the half.

Louis Campbell led all scorers with 21 points, including 9-of-11 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 from three-point range. Will Campbell added 15 points and 12 rebounds off the bench, his third double-double of the season. Duane Clements led the Cardinals with 14 points and Josh Murray added a career high 13 rebounds.

The Bulls will return to action this Saturday, when UB hosts Central Michigan for a 7:30 pm tipoff at Alumni Arena. UB will be looking for its first MAC win in that game.
