Hot-Shooting Bulls Defeat Texas Southern


The University at Buffalo Bulls shot 58.3% (14-of-24) from the field in the second half to pull away and defeat Texas Southern 80-61 Sunday (12/28) evening in the second game of the Cessna Classic Tournament at Wichita (KS) State. UB (7-4) will face Wichita State, 76-74 winners over William & Mary in the first game, on Monday (12/29) for the tournament championship.

Holding a slim 31-30 lead at the half, UB outscored Texas Southern 49-31 in the second stanza for the easy win. The Bulls hit on 25-of-51 field goals (49%) for the game while limiting the Tigers to only 32.4% (23-of-71) shooting, including just 28.9% in the second half. Texas Southern guard Randy Bolden scored a game-high 33 points on 12-of-32 shooting, but was the only player to score in double figures for the Tigers who fell to 1-10 on the year.

Photo of Scott McMillinThe Bulls had three players in double figures, led by senior guard Mike Martinho (Rahway, NJ/Union Catholic) with 21 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Senior swingman Rasaun Young (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) scored 20 points, while senior forward Scott McMillin (Wichita KS/Bishop Carroll) added 19 points, including hitting a perfect 3-of-3 from behind the arc, and grabbed six rebounds. UB as a team made 32 trips to the charity stripe, hitting on 25 compared to the Tigers' 8-of-12 performance.

Following the championship game on Monday (12/29), the Bulls will return home to face Mid-Con foe Oral Roberts on Saturday (1/3) in Alumni Arena at 8:20 pm.
