Bulls Fall in Overtime at UNC Asheville, 101-90

Calvin Betts scores a career-high 16 points, all in the second half and overtime

ASHEVILLE, NC – Calvin Betts (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) scored a career-high 16 points and grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the University at Buffalo men’s basketball team fell in overtime at UNC Asheville, 101-90. Sean Smiley (Erie, PA/McDowell) led UB in scoring with 18 points. The Bulls led for the majority of the contest, but ultimately a 49-9 free throw shooting edge for UNC Asheville (9-3) was too much for UB to overcome.

Buffalo (6-6) led by as much as 15 in the first half, with Smiley’s eight first half points leading the way for UB in the first 20 minutes. The Bulls made 18 field goals to only nine for the Bulldogs in the first half, but UNC Asheville stayed in the game by making 14 first half free throws to just one for UB. Those free throws allowed UNC Asheville cut the UB advantage to as little as five until Brian Addison (Queens, NY/Andrew Jackson) hit a three-pointer as time expired in the first half to give the Bulls a 42-33 lead at the break.

In the second stanza, UB was able to extend their advantage to as much as 14 when Betts drained his fifth field goal of the half to give the Bulls a 71-57 lead with 8:21 remaining in the half. Betts scored all 16 of his points in the second half and overtime. The Bulldogs slowly chipped away at the UB lead until tying the score at 80-80 with 42 seconds remaining in regulation time.

Kenny George scored the first basket of overtime for UNC Asheville and the Bulldogs never looked back, out-scoring the Bulls 21-10 in the extra session, with 11 points coming at the free throw line.

Andy Robinson (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) and Rodney Pierce (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) joined Betts and Smiley in reaching double-figures for UB. Robinson scored 14 points and Pierce added 13. Andrew Atman (Pittsburgh,PA/Upper St. Clair) recorded a career-high 10 rebounds

Buffalo was whistled for 33 fouls in the contest, while UNC Asheville committed only 11 fouls.

UNC Asheville was led by 23 points from Bryan Smithson and also got a 21 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks from the 7-foot-7 George, who is the nation’s leading shot blocker, averaging 5.9 blocks per game.

UB will return to the court on Sunday, January 6 when they travel to Kent State for their first Mid-American Conference game of the season. Tip-off between the Bulls and the Golden Flashes is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
