Men's Hoops Claims Win in USF Tournament

Bulls Defeat Alcorn State 74-69

TAMPA, FL - The University at Buffalo came back from a disappointing loss in the opening round of the USF Shootout, and notched a 74-69 victory over Alcorn State in the tournament's consulation game.

UB got behind early, trailing 8-3 before a layup by Jason Robinson (Seattle, WA/Curtis) tied it at 11-11. Alcorn State would eventually stake a seven-point lead, 23-16, at the 9:20 mark before UB made a charge. The Bulls then went on an 8-0 run to grab the lead at 24-23, but two free throws by Walter Harper gave the lead back to the Braves. Damien Foster (Buffalo, NY/Traditional) then hit a three-pointer with 6:44 to play in the half, giving UB a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the game at 27-25. That 8-0 UB run started a 16-4 run over an eight minute span to give UB a seven point lead, 34-27, with two minutes remaining, as the Bulls took a 38-32 lead into halftime.

Alcorn State came out in the second half with a 5-1 run as a three-pointer by Jason Cable made it a two-point game at 39-27 with 17:54 to play. The Bulls responded with a layup by Robert Brown (Oak Park, MI/Oak Park) and two free throws by Foster. Brown then had a dunk to push the lead to eight points at 45-37 with 15:58 to play. The Braves cut the lead to five points on three other occassions over the next three minutes, but each time, Robinson came up with a big shot to extend UB's lead.

A three-point play by Alcorn's Marcus Fleming cut it to five with 15:48 to play, and Robinson answered with a three-pointer to extend the lead to 48-40. After a steal and a layup by the Braves' Cable cut the lead to five, Robinson answered again, this time with a short jumper to push the lead to 52-45 with 12:33 to play. A jumper by Alcorn State would cut it the lead to five points one more time at the 10:28 mark, and again Robinson answered with a big three-pointer to extend the Bulls' lead to 55-47 with just under nine minutes to play. The Braves would make a later charge, and slowly closed the gap to just two points, 71-69, after a three-pointer by Devon Pack. Brown would then hit 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch for the 74-69 final score.

Buffalo was led by Robert Brown with a game-high 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Jason Robinson had 17 points and nine rebounds for UB as well. Alcorn State was led by Marcus Fleming with 18 points and Jason Cable with 17 points. UB's Robert Brown was named to the all-tournament team along with B.B.
