Canisius Defeats Bulls

UB Falls With Two Starters Injured

BUFFALO, NY - Missing two of the team's five starters, the UB Bulls men's basketball team lost to Canisius Saturday night 78-46 in front of 1,148 fans at the Koessler Center.

The Bulls were without the services of Nikolai Alexeev (Minsk, Belarus) and Alexei Vasiliev (St. Petersburg, Russia), both injured with sprained ankles. Vasiliev sprained his left ankle in the first half at New Hampshire and Alexeev sprained his right ankle in practice on Thursday. Both are questionable for the game against Manhattan on Tuesday, Nov. 30.

With Alexeev out of the game, the Golden Griffins pounded the ball inside against UB early and often. Dale Sawyers ignited the quick start for Canisius as they jumped out to an early 18-4 lead in the first eight minutes of the game. Sawyers scored 12 of the Griffs 18 points in that run. Canisius would increase their lead to as many as 20 points in the first half, 30-10, before UB closed with a rally. The Bulls used a 7-2 run and closed the half with an 8-1 run, cutting the lead to 11 points, 36-25, at halftime.

Canisius came out the second half and continued what was successful for them in the first half, getting the ball inside. The Golden Griffins used a 14-2 run early in the half to take control for good, increasing their lead to 23 points, 57-34, with nine minutes remaining. The Bulls could not get any closer and trailed by their largest margin, 32 points, with the final score of 78-46.

Mike McKie (Brooklyn, NY/Tilden) led the team in scoring in the first start of his collegiate career. McKie had 14 points and six rebounds while blocking three shots. Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) had 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds and Damien Foster (Buffalo, NY/Traditional) had 11 points. Canisius was led by Dale Sawyers with 18 points and 11 rebounds and Dorian McClure with 17 points.
