MEN'S BASKETBALL

UB Notches First Win

Campbell Leads Bulls to Victory

BUFFALO, NY - The UB men's basketball team picked up their first win of the season with an 81-78 victory at New Hampshire behind a great second half performance by Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway).

Leading by two at the half, 42-40, Campbell led the Bulls charge out of the lockerroom, scoring UB's first eight points of the half and 12 of the team's first 16 points of the second half. Many of his shots came off spectacular moves and two came directly off a steal created by Campbell. UB led the entire second half, but a relentless New Hampshire team kept fighting back. Trailing by eight points, 77-69, with 2:46 to go, the Wildcats came back with a 6-0 run, cutting the Bulls lead to just two points, 77-75, with under a minute to play. Davis Lawrence (Brooklyn, NY/New Utrecht) was in off the bench for the Bulls and hit a 12-foot jumper in the lane with 0:36 remaining to push the lead to four points, 79-75. The Wildcats got a three-pointer by Marcelle Williams with 17.9 seconds left, but Campbell calmly sank two free throws to secure the Bulls 81-78 win.

The first half was built on momentum swings for each team. The Bulls built a lead over the first seven minutes of the game, leading by as many as ten points, 27-17, with 13:10 left in the half. New Hampshire would then get a big momentum swing and go on a 13-1 run and take the lead, 30-28, with 6:21 left in the half. UB then used a 9-2 run to regain the lead by five with under four minutes left and went into halftime up by two, 42-40.

The Bulls (1-2) were led in scoring by Louis Campbell with a game high 20 points, 18 of which came in the second half. He also grabbed seven rebounds and had four steals. Damien Foster (Buffalo, NY/Traditional) added 18 points, including four three-pointers, and Nikolai Alexeev (Minsk, Belarus) had 12 points. Mike McKie (Brooklyn, NY/Tilden) came off the bench for UB to record a career-high 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.
