UB Falls to CornellBUFFALO, NY - The UB men's basketball team dropped their second straight game to open the season with a 71-60 loss to Cornell Sunday night. The Bulls trailed by just three points, 33-30, at halftime, but in the second half showed some effects of the double overtime loss to Niagara this past Friday night. The Big Red started off the second half with a 9-2 run, pushing their lead up to ten, 42-32, five minutes into the second half. UB's Rick Fox (Toledo, OH/St. Francis DeSales) then hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to seven, but Cornell responded with a three pointer by Ray Mercedes and two free throws to increase the lead back to 12 points, 47-35, with 14:15 left in the game. Nikolai Alexeev (Minsk, Belarus) converted on a put back to cut the Cornell lead to six, 49-43, with 11:09 remaining to help keep the Bulls close, but the Big Red again responded with two three pointers, one by Kevin Cuttica and the second by Wallace Prather, to quickly push the lead back to 12 points. UB came back again as Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) hit a running jumper to cut the lead to seven and brought back thoughts of another UB comeback similar to Friday night's game against Niagara. Cornell held on and scored the last four points and take the 71-60 win. The Bulls were led in scoring by Louis Campbell with 15 points and
Alexei Vasiliev (St. Petersburg, Russia) with 12 points and four
assists. Nikolai Alexeev had 10 points and eight rebounds and Mike
McKie (Brooklyn, NY/Tilden) had 10 points, eight rebounds and three
blocks in his first action of the season. Cornell was led by Wallace Prather
with a game-high 16 points and Keirian Brown with 15.
