Men’s Basketball Announces 2006-07 Award Winners

Mulkey, Atman, Young and Idbihi earn honors

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men’s basketball team handed out its season-ending awards at the annual UB Athletic Awards Banquet at the Millennium Hotel in Cheektowaga.

Receiving awards from the men’s basketball staff were freshman Byron Mulkey (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara Wheatfield), junior Andrew Atman (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) and seniors Darwin Young (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) and Yassin Idbihi (Tangier, Morocco/Schloss Hagerhof).

Mulkey earned the Top Newcomer Award. Although he didn’t enter the Bulls’ lineup until January 31, the freshman point guard wasted little time making an impact on the UB squad. Mulkey averaged 9.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 11 games. His best game of the season came in the Bulls’ victory over Ohio. Against the Bobcats, Mulkey had seven points, seven rebounds, 14 assists and three steals. His 14 assists was the fifth-highest single-game assist total in school history. Only Modie Cox (15 in 1995) had more assists in a game since the Bulls returned to Division I in 1991. Mulkey added a season-high 21 points at Kent State.

Atman earned the Most Improved Player Award. Like Mulkey, Atman began to make his impact late in the year. After playing sparingly in nine games, Atman saw the first significant action of the season against Detroit on February 17. The junior forward responded by scoring 10 points and pulling down five rebounds. Atman would finish the season by scoring in the final five games of the regular season. He averaged 6.4 points and 3.2 rebounds over the five-game span.

Young earned the Coaches’ Award. Throughout the season and his career, Young proved to be one of the hardest working players on the team. He averaged 2.7 points and 1.3 rebounds per game on the season. His game improved as the season progressed and he averaged 4.4 points over the final 15 games of the year. He scored a season-high 10 points in the Bulls’ victory over Bowling Green.

Idbihi took home the Most Outstanding Player Award. The senior forward had the finest season of his career as he averaged team highs of 15.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. He ranked third in the Mid-American Conference in scoring and led the league in rebounding. He was named All-MAC Honorable Mention and to the NABC All-District Second Team. Idbihi finished his stellar career as the Bulls’ fourth all-time leading scorer (1,514 points) and third all-time leading rebounder (844 rebounds). He became the first player in school history to score 1,500 points and pull down 800 rebounds.

The Bulls finished the 2006-07 season with a 12-19 overall record and a 4-12 conference mark.
