UB Men's Basketball Announces Annual Team Awards

Campbell Named MVP; Brown Tabbed as Newcomer of the Year

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's basketball team announced its 2000-01 team awards at the annual Athletic Awards Banquet, held at Samuel's Grande Manor on Tuesday, May 1. Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) was named Most Valuable Player, Rob Brown (Oak Park, MI/Schoolcraft (MI) JC) earned Newcomer of the Year honors, Davis Lawrence (Brooklyn, NY/New Utrecht) was named Most Improved Player, and Clement Smith (Brooklyn, NY/Westinghouse) received the team's Coach's Award.

Louis Campbell
Campbell became just the 11th player in school history to go over 1,000 career points, and the ninth to do so in three seasons, after scoring 380 points this past season. Campbell finished the season averaging 13.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.9 steals per game. He posted three double-doubles on the year while also scoring a season-best 23 points on three occasions. Campbell also had eight assists in a game on three occasions to match his career high, and he matched his career high with six steals at Ohio on February 21. Campbell also led the Bulls in minutes played with 998 (35.6 per game).

Rob Brown
Brown made an immediate impact on the 2000-01 squad in his first season at Buffalo after transferring from Schoolcraft Junior College in Michigan. Brown led the Bulls with per game averages of 15.3 points (13th in the Mid-American Conference) and 5.7 rebounds (14th in the MAC) en route to being named one of the top 15 JUCO transfers by College Insider.com. He posted three double-doubles on the season and scored in double figures in 24 of Buffalo's 28 games. In addition, Brown was named to the South Florida Classic All- Tournament Team and had a career-best 16 rebounds and 21 points in a win over Eastern Michigan on February 12. His season-high was 25 points versus Niagara in his very first game as a Bull.

Davis Lawrence
One of the most improved players in the MAC, Lawrence went from a role-playing backup position last season to starting 16 games and averaging 22.4 minutes per contest this past season. Lawrence doubled his scoring average from a year ago, finishing the 2000-01 season averaging 4.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. In MAC games only, he averaged 5.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. Lawrence scored a career-high 15 points in a win over Duquesne on December 5, and he had 13 points, six assists and a career-best four steals in a 78-77 loss at Akron on February 3.

Clement Smith
Smith also ranks as one of the most improved players on the team and was playing his finest basketball of the season when he suffered a partially dislocated left shoulder at Akron on February 3 which forced him to miss seven games. He finished the season averaging 3.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game while starting 13 of 20 contests. Smith had a career-best nine points in Buffalo's season- opener against Niagara on November 17, and he grabbed a career-high eight rebounds on two separate occasions.

The Bulls finished the 2000-01 season with a 4-24 overall record and a 2-16 MAC record.
