Men’s Basketball Announces 2004-05 Award Winners
Receiving awards from head coach Reggie Witherspoon and his staff were Roderick Middleton (University Park, IL/Marian Catholic), Daniel Gilbert (Detroit, MI/Cass Technical) and Turner Battle (Kernersville, NC/East Forsyth). Middleton earned the Most Improved Player Award. The junior guard averaged 6.4 points and 3.2 rebounds per game, up from 5.2 points and 2.9 rebounds per game last season. He especially improved his perimeter shooting as he shot a team-best 40.7 percent from beyond the arc. He also had a career-high 44 steals on the campaign.
Battle was named the team's Most Valuable Player for the third straight season. He also earned the UB Male Athlete of the Year award for the second year in a row. Battle led the Bulls in scoring (15.5 ppg) and assists (4.4 apg) en route to earning Mid-American Conference Player of the Year honors. He was also named Associated Press All-American Honorable Mention and was one of only two players in the nation to be named an All-American and an Academic All-American this season.
The Bulls finished the season with a 23-10 record - their best mark in school history. After making it to the Mid-American Conference Tournament championship game, UB made its first-ever postseason appearance and defeated Drexel in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament before falling to tournament runner-up Saint Joseph's in the following round. For its accomplishments, the team earned the Athletic Directors Team Award.
