UB Hires Final Hoops AssistantBUFFALO, NY - Reggie Witherspoon has filled his final coaching staff position with the hiring of Chris Hawkins as the Bulls newest assistant men's basketball coach. Earlier this month, Witherspoon also added Michael Mennenga to the UB coaching staff.
As a player for the Highlanders, Hawkins was named the Most Valuable Player of the 1991-92 team that won the Big South regular season championship. Prior to his coaching stint at Radford, Hawkins coached for three seasons at Bladensburg High School in Bladensburg, MD. His first year was as an assistant coach, followed by two seasons as the head coach. During his tenure as head coach, he guided the team to a 27-15 record, including a 17-5 record during the 1996-97 season. "I am truly excited about having Chris Hawkins as part of or staff and what he brings to the program in terms of leadership, recruiting and mentoring the young men in our program," said UB head coach Reggie Witherspoon. "Chris has been very instrumental in the success of Radford's program and I know he will bring that same winning energy and enthusiasm to our program." Coach Witherspoon has now filled his coaching staff positions with the
recent hirings. In addition to Hawkins and Mennenga, who will serve as UB's
primary recruiters, Jim Kwitchoff will also serve as an assistant coach for
Witherspoon. Kevin Lake and Steve Ciemcioch will serve as part-time adminstrative
assistants for the program.
