Men's Hoops Signs Junior College Transfer

Bulls Sign Point Guard for Next Season

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo has announced the signing of junior college transfer Gabe Cagwin (Belfair, WA) to the men's basketball team for next season. Cagwin is the first recruit signed by newly appointed head coach Reggie Witherspoon and his coaching staff.

Cagwin is a 5-10, 165 pound, point guard from Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, CO. Last season, he helped lead the Plainsmen to a District and Regional Championship and a seventh place finish in the Junior College National Tournament. Cagwin shot 46% from the field and 81% from the free throw line last season, averaging 7.7 points per game and 5.0 assists per game.

Northeastern head coach Lowell Roumph said Cagwin would be a good fit for Buffalo. "Gabe is a great on the ball defender, and is a very athletic player. He's a great free throw shooter, which is what you need in your point guard for late game situations. He's not only a good athlete and team leader on the court but he's a great student off the court."

Prior to attending Northeastern, Cagwin played his freshman season at the University of Cal-Irvine. In one of his best games there, he scored 20 points against Oregon State in an ESPN nationally televised game. He played in 17 games for the Anteaters and averaged 7.2 points per game in 17.6 minutes per game. He scored in double figures in four games and had 17 assists on the year.

"I was impressed with how Gabe took the challenge of improving on his game and learning to become a better leader for his team," said Buffalo head coach Reggie Witherspoon. "What most impresses me about him is his ability to defend on the ball. He brings to the team the ability to shoot and score as well as lead the team from the point guard position and he makes his teammates better."

Other school that were recruiting Cagwin included Iowa State, Vanderbilt, Loyola Marymount, UMKC, Idaho State, Drake, Oral Roberts and Brown.
