UB Hoops Gets National Recognition
Campbell's Steal Against Akron Voted Best in the Nation
BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's basketball team
received some national recognition as Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway)
was awarded with the best steal of the year in all Division I college basketball
in the Compaq Plays of the Year voting.

Louis Campbell |
The award-winning play came at the end of the UB victory over Akron in
Alumni Arena on January 24, 2000. In that game, the Bulls trailed by one point,
83-82, with under 30 seconds to play. Campbell took a running jumper in the
lane that bounced off the rim and was rebounded by Akron's George Phillips.
As Phillips turned and threw an outlet pass, Campbell jumped and stole the
pass with one hand, and swatted the ball directly into the hands of teammate
Mike McKie (Brooklyn, NY/Tilden) who was wide open under the
basket. McKie laid the ball in for the game winning shot with 1.7 seconds left,
giving the Bulls an 84-83 win.
The award was part of the Compaq College Plays Program, which awarded
schools for outstanding plays in both football and men and women's basketball
throughout the year. Plays were awarded under the categories of best block,
best assist, best steal, best shot, best hustle play, most unusual play, most
significant play and the play of the year.
