BUFFALO, NY University at Buffalo men's basketball player Turner Battle (Kernersville, NC/East Forsyth) was named the Mid-American Conference Men's Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 14. The award, announced by the league headquarters in Cleveland, is the third for Battle this season and the third consecutive week that a UB athlete has earned the honor.

Battle, a senior communication major with a 3.557 grade point average, averaged 15.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists in UB's four-game run through the MAC Tournament. The 6-3 guard scored 22 points while adding eight rebounds and six assists in the championship game against Ohio on March 12, and his seven free throws in the final minute sealed the semifinal victory over Western Michigan on March 11.

The Scholar Athlete award capped an impressive week for Battle as he also earned MAC Player of the Year, First-Team All-MAC and Academic All-MAC recognitions.

During the 2004-05 campaign, Battle has been named the league's Scholar Athlete of the Week three times. He also earned the honor on January 11 and February 1.

UB athletes have been honored as the MAC Male or Female Scholar Athlete of the Week 11 times during the 2004-05 academic year, tying Eastern Michigan for the most selections. It is also the third straight week that a UB individual has been selected. Women's swimmer Jennefer Brankovsky (Toronto, Ontario/Don Mills CI) was selected on March 1 and women's track and field athlete Faith Thompson (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) earned the honor last week.

The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to both a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a voting group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
