Turner Battle Named Mid-American Conference Player of the Year
"This is an exciting thing for Turner to be recognized because he is a great representative of this University and this area," head coach Reggie Witherspoon said. "The fact that he is being honored in this way defies a whole lot of odds - first that he would come here from North Carolina and then for him to exceed any of the hype that was here before he came. For Turner to take a program that nobody said would ever be successful at this level and get it beyond respectability is a tremendous thing for college athletics in general." Battle, who has helped lead the Bulls to a school record 20 wins, leads UB in scoring (15.4 ppg) and assists (4.5 apg) for the third straight year. He ranks in the top 15 in the MAC in six different categories - including scoring (8th), field goal percentage (3rd), assists (5th), steals (12th), assists/turnover ratio (3rd) and defensive rebounds (14th). He is the Bulls' seventh all-time leading scorer with 1,335 points and became the first UB player to rack up 1,000 points, 400 rebounds and 400 assists in a career. Battle was also named to the All-MAC First Team for the first time in his career. Chet Mason and Danny Horace of Miami, Josh Almanson of Bowling Green and Ben Reed of Western Michigan round out the first team selections.
Buffalo (20-8) will face Toledo in the quarterfinal round of First Energy Mid-American Conference Tournament on Thursday at noon at the Gund Arena. |
