Calvin Cage Named MAC Basketball Player of the Week
CLEVELAND, OH On Monday, University at Buffalo sophomore guard Calvin Cage (Capital Heights, MD/Bladensburg) was named the Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the East Division. Cage came off the bench to spark the Bulls to victories over Kent State and Miami. Cage scored 18 points, including four three-pointers in a win over East Division winner Kent State on February 25. He followed with a season-high 22 points in UB's first-ever win at Miami on February 28. For the week, Cage averaged 20.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 2.0 steals to help the Bulls improve their MAC win total to a best-ever nine. In UB's two wins, Cage shot 54.2 percent (13-24) from the floor and 57.1 percent (8-14) from beyond the arc. Heading into the February 25th contest against Kent State, Cage was averaging 5.3 points per game and had scored more than 15 points only once in his career - 24 points against Northwestern last season. The Capital Heights, MD native has upped his scoring average to 7.1 points per game. Cage is the third different UB player to earn MAC Player of the Week honors this season. Mario Jordan (Cleveland, OH/Benedictine) won the award on December 8 and Turner Battle (Kernersville, NC/East Forsyth) was honored on February 2. Since joining the MAC in 1998, the Bulls have never had more than one player named Player of the Week in a season. UB is 14-11 overall and 9-7 in the conference. The Bulls are currently riding a five-game
winning streak and will next face-off against Ohio at Alumni Arena on Wednesday night at 7 pm. |
