Buffalo's Four Scholarship Freshmen Have Combined For A 3.35 Grade Point Average
 | | Turner Battle |
BUFFALO, NY The University at Buffalo Bulls men's basketball freshmen class consisting
of Turner Battle (Kernersville, NC/East
Forsyth), Jason Bird (Ypsilanti,
MI/Ypsilanti), Daniel Gilbert (Detroit, MI/Cass
Technical) and Mark Bortz (Commerce Township/Walled Lake
Central) have combined for the highest grade point average of any freshman class in the country. The four
Bulls have a cumulative 3.35 GPA after the completion of the fall semester.
 | | Jason Bird | Buffalo edged out Nebraska, who had four scholarship freshmen that combined for a 3.29
GPA in a poll conducted by sports information directors across the country.
 | | Daniel Gilbert | In addition to their work in the classroom, all four freshmen at Buffalo have made
significant contributions on the court. Battle has started all 29 games at point guard for the Bulls and has
averaged 7.3 points per game and 3.4 assists per game. Bird, a 6-4 shooting guard, has appeared in 23 games
off the bench and is averaging 3.2 points per game and 1.1 rebounds per game. Gilbert has played in all
29 games, earning one start while averaging 2.8 points per game and 1.3 rebounds. Bortz is contributing
5.5 points per game while grabbing 3.4 rebounds per game despite being slowed by a knee injury that
forced him to miss seven games.
 | | Mark Bortz |
The Bulls finished the regular season with a 12-17 overall record and a 7-11 conference mark
in its best season since the program posted a 15-13 record during the 1997-98 season.
