Kent State Cruises Past UB, 99-65KENT, OH - Kent State shot 59% from the floor and turned 17 Buffalo turnovers into 29 points en route to a 99-65 victory in Mid-American Conference men's basketball action at the Memorial and Athletic Convocation Center. With the win the Golden Flashes (20-8, 13-4 in the MAC) claimed their first-ever MAC Division title in their 50-year association with the conference. Kent State had four players in double figures led by Trevor Huffman who had 25 points and five assists. Kent State wasted little time in taking control of the game as the Bulls (4-22, 2-15) were sluggish from the outset after a big upset win over Miami on Saturday night. Buffalo jumped out to a 3-2 lead on two free throws by Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) with 18:05 left for UB's only lead of the game. From there, Kent State embarked on a 26-6 run over the next nine minutes to take a 28-9 lead with 9:21 remaining in the first half. Huffman had seven points and two assists during that stretch as the Flashes opened up a double-digit lead that lasted the rest of the game. The Bulls pulled to within 13 points (34-21) with 6:06 left on a jumper by Robert Brown (Oak Park, MI/Oak Park) - who finished with 21 points but that was as close as the Bulls would get. Huffman hit another jumper that keyed a 14-4 run to close the half as Buffalo trailed 50-27 at intermission. Kent State shot 61.3% from the field in the first half while Buffalo committed eight turnovers and missed numerous opportunities around the basket. "We didn't bring the necessary effort or intensity to compete with this team tonight," said UB head coach Reggie Witherspoon. "They played with a sense of purpose that we simply didn't match. Some of it was their execution, but to take nothing away from Kent State, we did not defend like we have been. We didn't have the emotion, intensity or effort that we have shown recently." The Bulls lone bright spot was the play of
Louis Campbell. Campbell became just the
11th player in UB history to score over 1,000 points in his career and the ninth to do it in three years
when he hit a free throw with 18:42 remaining in the game. Campbell finished with a team-high
22 points and six rebounds, which moved him into tenth place all-time in scoring with 1,012 points. |
