Bulls Struggle Against Miami

Poor shooting plagues Buffalo in 63-35 loss

BUFFALO, NY The Buffalo men's basketball team struggled offensively and dropped a 63-35 decision to Miami at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. It marked the second straight game that the Bulls suffered through a poor shooting performance.

Buffalo (4-19, 1-13) got off to a sluggish start and never seemed to get into gear as Miami jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead. B.J. Walker (Cincinnati, OH/Mt. Healthy) scored on a layup, at the 15:42 mark, to finally put the Bulls on the board. However, it was one of only four first-half field goals for the Bulls. Miami was able to build a lead when UB shooters hit a dry spell and went 4:30 without scoring a point. Things got a little testy late in the first half as a tussle under the UB basket resulted in Miami forward Danny Horace throwing a punch at Walker. Horace was ejected from the contest. The half came to an end with the RedHawks holding a 28-15 advantage.

The Bulls' struggles continued in the second half as a Jason Bird (Ypsilanti, MI/Ypsilanti) jumper was the only points the Bulls could muster in the first 5:25 of the second stanza. Miami built its lead to as large as 32 points before coasting to the victory.

The numbers told the story of this game as UB shot 20 percent (10-50) from the floor, including 16.7 percent (4-24) from beyond the arc. Conversely, Miami shot 50 percent (24-48) from the field, including eight three-pointers. The 35 points scored by Buffalo was the lowest by a UB squad since the inception of the shot clock. The Bulls did win the battle of the boards, outrebounding the RedHawks, 38-32.

Bird was the lone Bull to reach double-figures with 11 points. Walker added seven points and six rebounds. Daniel Gilbert's (Detroit, MI/Cass Technical) 11 rebounds was a career-high.

Juby Johnson led four RedHawks in double-figures with 12 points. Josh Hausfeld and Chet Mason each added 11.

"Our response to the adversity of being down and not making shots was not really good," Head Coach Reggie Witherspoon said. "That's the thing that we have got to get corrected."

The Bulls will look to get back on track on Tuesday when they host Toledo at Alumni Arena. Tipoff is slated for 7 pm.
