Cagwin Named To Verizon Academic All-District I Men's Basketball TeamBUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo senior Gabe Cagwin (Seattle, WA/North Mason High School/Northeastern Junior College) of the men's basketball team has been named to the 2002 Verizon All-Academic District I team for his outstanding performances on the court and in the classroom.
Cagwin has appeared in 21 games for the Bulls this year, including four as a starter. He is averaging 3.2 points per game and 1.2 rebounds per game as one of the Bulls' top defenders. The Seattle native, who has missed the past five games with a lower leg injury, scored a career-high 13 points in a 73-72 Buffalo victory over New Hampshire on December 1. Four days later, he followed up his career performance with 11 points on 3-of-4 three-point shooting in a 65-54 win at Cornell. Cagwin maintains a 3.761 grade point average while pursuing a major in Communication. He joins Joe Case (Sr., Columbia), Dedrick Dye (Jr., Wagner), Andrew Gellert (Sr., Harvard) and Elliott Prasse-Freeeman (Jr., Harvard) as the players from District I who will be eligible for the national Academic All-America ballot which will be announced on Thursday, March 7, 2002. The District I team is selected by a vote of the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) membership. To be eligible, a player must be at least a sophomore with a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. The District I University Division includes all NCAA Division I men's basketball teams from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. The Bulls, at 11-15 overall and 6-9 in the Mid-American Conference, have posted more overall wins
this year than they did in the past two years when they went a combined 9-47. In addition, the six
conference wins matched the program's total output in the first three years (6-48). |
