Toledo Tops Buffalo, 78-66BUFFALO, NY - Sophomore Nick Moore scored 21 points and Greg Stempin tallied 16 points and added nine rebounds as the University of Toledo held off Buffalo, 78-66, before 1,086 at Alumni Arena. Moore scored the decisive eight points of the game early in the second half as the Rockets extended a halftime lead and never let the hungry Bulls get over the hump. After Buffalo's Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway), who finished with a team-high 19 points, hit a three-pointer to cut the Toledo lead to 40-36 with 16:20 remaining, Moore hit three straight jumpers - two of them from three-point range - to extend the lead to 48-36 and Buffalo never got that close again. The Bulls cut the lead to as few as six points (57-51) on another trifecta by Campbell, but Moore and Stempin followed with two straight buckets to keep the Bulls at bay. Toledo (17-9, 9-6 in the MAC) built a 35-24 lead on Buffalo with some outstanding shooting and a lack of finishing touch by the Bulls (3-20, 1-13). The Rockets shot the ball very well in the opening ten minutes while Buffalo was missing several opportunities around the basket. "We had so many situations where we did everything right until it was time to put the ball in the basket," said UB head coach Reggie Witherspoon. "That saps your team's energy and there were a few times where we were ready to score on a layup but missed and before you know they're scoring at our end. I felt like there was an eight-point swing in the first half on two situations like that." Buffalo trailed 26-23 with 4:59 left in the first half on a three-point play by Robert Brown (Oak Park, MI/Oak Park), who had 13 points, but Toledo finished the half strong. The Rockets outscored the Bulls 9-1 in the final five minutes to take an 11-point lead at halftime. Jason Robinson (Seattle, WA/Curtis) added 11 points and six
rebounds for Buffalo while Davis Lawrence (Brooklyn, NY/New
Utrecht) had nine points and six rebounds. Toledo held a 33-25
rebounding edge - dropping Buffalo to 0-13 this season when being outrebounded -
and forced 18 turnovers by the Bulls. The Rockets ended up shooting 53% from
the floor for the game. |
