Bulls Fall to Kent State, 98-55
KENT, OH Buffalo fell to Kent State, 98-55, in Mid-American Conference action at the Memorial Athletic Center on Tuesday night. The Golden Flashes, the MAC East Division's top team, shot 56.9 percent from the floor and dominated the inside game. Kent State also capitalized on 14 UB turnovers, turning them into 21 points. Buffalo (4-18, 1-12) played well in the opening stages of the contest. The teams traded buckets for the early part of the first half and a Mario Jordan (Cleveland, OH/Benedictine) layup tied the game, 17-17, with 12:20 remaining. However, Kent State shooters heated up and went on an 18-1 scoring run and never looked back. The Golden Flashes held a 46-26 halftime advantage. UB point guard Davis Lawrence (Brooklyn, NY/New Utrecht) led all scorers at halftime with 12 points on 4-for-4 shooting, including three three-pointers. The Kent State barrage continued in the second half, allowing Kent State to coast to the victory. Jason Bird (Ypsilanti, MI/Ypsilanti) led the Bulls with 14 points, including three treys. Mark Bortz (Commerce Township, MI/Walled Lake Central) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and had two blocked shots. Daniel Gilbert (Detroit, MI/Cass Technical) tied a career-high with six assists. Kent State (18-5, 11-4) had five players finish in double-figures. Clif Brown led the Golden Flashes with 19 points on 8-for-10 shooting. Anthony Wilkins added 18 points and drained five of Kent State's 13 three-pointers. "Kent State did a great job," Head Coach Reggie Witherspoon said. They played with a lot of emotion and our team didn't. There are going to be times when we don't play well, but we have to play harder than that." |
