Buffalo Ends Losing Streak With 69-57 Win Over Central MichiganBUFFALO, NY Senior Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) scored a game-high 19 points and Buffalo connected on 8-of-12 three-pointers in the second half to snap a four-game losing streak with a 69-57 win over Central Michigan on Saturday afternoon. The game, which was televised live on Empire and ESPN Plus, was played before a crowd of 1,522 at Alumni Arena. The Bulls improved to 11-14 overall and 6-8 in the Mid-American Conference and have now won as many MAC games this year as they had in the previous three years competing in the MAC when they went 6-48. Central Michigan fell to 7-15 overall and 4-10 in the MAC, losing the important head-to-head tiebreaker with Buffalo.
After trailing by one point, 29-28, at the half despite a 50 percent shooting performance (11-of-22) by Central Michigan, Buffalo put together one of its finest second-half performances of the season. The Bulls outscored the Chippewas, 41-28, over the final 20 minutes by shooting 12-of-21 (57 percent) from the field, including a remarkable 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from behind the three-point arc. Campbell knocked down one of his game-high five three-pointers to give UB a 39-35 lead with 15:11 remaining in the second half. The trifecta by Campbell started a span of 8:54 where Buffalo connected on six of seven three-point attempts to break the game open. The backbreaker for the Chippewas was a three-pointer by junior Davis Lawrence (Brooklyn, NY/New Utrecht) to give UB's its largest lead of the game, 14 points (60-46), with 7:32 remaining. Central Michigan never got closer than eight points (1:18 remaining) the rest of the way. "Almost every team in the conference has gone through what we went through," said Buffalo coach Reggie Witherspoon about UB's losing streak. "It's not that you went through it, it's how you deal with it. If you get knocked down you've got to be able to get back up. This afternoon our guys got up." Lawrence scored a season-high 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting and Buffalo's leading scorer Darcel Williams (Buffalo, NY/Traditional) had nine points and five rebounds. Chad Pleiness had 14 points to lead Central Michigan and David Webber grabbed a game-high eight boards to go with his eight points. Buffalo finished the game shooting 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the field and a red-hot 12-of-24 (50 percent) from behind the three-point arc while Central Michigan was 22-of-43 from the field (51.2 percent) and 4-of-14 on three-pointers. Buffalo's 12 three pointers were the fourth most in UB history. The Bulls held the advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Chippewas, 31-26. Buffalo will travel to Toledo for a pivotal MAC meeting with the Rockets on
Wednesday, February 20 (7 p.m.). A Buffalo win at Toledo would put the Bulls in great position to host a
first-round MAC Tournament game on March 4. |
