UB Hangs Tough, Falls to BGSUBOWLING GREEN, OH - The Bowling Green Falcons had won all nine games at Anderson Arena going into tonight's game, and the UB Bulls were 1-11 on the road this year and still in search of their first ever MAC road win. Those who thought these facts would mean an easy win for Bowling Green were mistaken as Buffalo had their best road performance of the season, but fell short of the win, 77-68, against BGSU. The Bulls trailed by six at the half, 46-40, and the Falcons extended that lead to ten points, 54-44, two minutes into the second half. The Bulls fought back and went on an 13-2 run over the next two minutes to take the lead. Damien Foster (Buffalo, NY/Traditional) sparked the Bulls run, scoring nine of his game high 26 points during that run, and gave the Bulls a 57-56 lead. Bowling Green came back and scored on a layup by Anthony Stacey, but Foster responded with a jumper to put UB back on top 59-58 with 13:34 to play. Buffalo would extend their lead to three points on a layup by Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) to give the Bulls a 63-60 lead with 11:41 to play. Bowling Green then took control and held the Bulls scoreless for the next six minutes, using a 10-0 run to claim a seven point lead, 70-63, with 7:25 to play. A three-pointer by Alexei Vasiliev (St. Petersburg, Russia) on the next UB possession cut the lead to four, 70-66, with under five minutes remaining, but that was as close as the Bulls would get the rest of the game and Bowling Green held on for the 77-68 win. In the first half, UB got off to a quick start, scoring the first six points of the game on consecutive three-pointers by Foster and Vasiliev. Bowling Green would stay close behind the shooting of Dave Esterkamp, who scored 20 points in the first half on 8-of-9 shooting, and the Falcons took a 46-40 advantage into the lockerroom. Buffalo (5-18, 3-11) was led by Damien Foster with a game-high 26 points,
two points shy of his career high. Louis Campbell added 13 points, seven assists
and four steals and Mike McKie (Brooklyn, NY/Tilden) had eight
points, ten rebounds and four blocked shots. Dave Esterkamp led Bowling
Green (17-6, 9-4) with 23 points, 20 coming in the first half. Anthony Stacey
had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Len Matela came off the bench to record 14
points and 11 boards. |
