Bulls Nipped At Wire AgainBUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo made a stirring second-half comeback at Canisius on Tuesday night only to see their hearts broken in the final seconds again, 62-60, at the Koessler Center. Three days after being nipped at the buzzer by Akron, Buffalo saw a pair of free throws by Canisius guard Brian Dux with 3.6 seconds left spoil an incredible Bulls' rally that saw UB overcome a 44-25 halftime deficit despite dressing just eight players. Buffalo failed to convert on their final six shots after taking their first lead of the game 60-58 with 3:11 remaining on a jumper by Jason Robinson (Seattle, WA/Curtis). Canisius came back to tie on a baseline jumper by Toby Foster with :53.3 left before Dux untied it after being fouled with just 3.6 seconds left. UB's last shot, an 18-footer by Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway), was long as the buzzer sounded. That Buffalo (2-17) even had a shot to win was miraculous considering UB's current health and a horrific first half. UB dressed just eight players and saw the Golden Griffins hit 8-of-15 first-half three-point shots en route to a commanding 44-25 halftime lead. The Griffs led 21-15 with 9:12 remaining in the first half, before embarking on a 16-0 run, fueled by four three-point field goals, to take a 37-15 lead with 3:24 remaining in the half. Canisius's Toby Foster had 14 of his 16 points in the first half. The second half, however, saw the Bulls come out smoking and never let up while holding the Griffs to just 18 second-half points on their home floor. Buffalo opened the half with a 13-2 run keyed by a pair of baskets by Davis Lawrence (New York, NY/New Utrecht) on a layup and a steal and layup early in the second stanza. The Bulls continued to whittle away at the lead but trailed 58-51 with 6:17 remaining. However, Robinson hit a layup, Campbell drove for a score and Lawrence followed with a layup while being fouled after a steal and converted the free throw to tie the game at 58-58 with 4:13 left. UB, however, would score just one more field goal the rest of the way and Dux, who scored 14 points, would pull the game out for Canisius in the final seconds. The Bulls, who hit 14-of-28 trifectas at Akron, converted just 2-of-17 on
Tuesday and instead relied on their post game. Junior Robert Brown (Oak
Park, MI/Oak Park) had a team-high 16 points and seven rebounds to
lead Buffalo while junior Kevin Swoffer (Independence, MO/William
Chrisman), getting his first career start, had a career-high eight
points and two steals. Senior Damien Foster (Buffalo, NY/Traditional)
added 11 points and five boards for Buffalo, while Campbell had seven points,
eight assists and seven rebounds. |
