Bulls Fall at Northwestern

Big 10 Wildcats used strong interior game to score 79-63 win

EVANSTON, IL - Northwestern University used a powerful inside game and a large rebounding edge to down the University at Buffalo, 79-63, in a non-conference game at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Northwestern, of the Big 10, had 38 points in the paint and held a 37-29 rebounding edge in the game to post the win. The Wildcats (8-13) extended Buffalo's losing streak to ten games with the victory.

The Wildcats used a 15-2 run midway through the first half to grab control of the game. The Bulls trailed just 15-12 with 13:22 remaining after a three-pointer by Damien Foster (Buffalo, NY/Traditional). After that, however, Northwestern opened up a 30-14 lead over the next four minutes capped by a layup by Winston Blake.

Buffalo cut the lead to 42-30 at halftime as Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) - who scored a game-high 23 points - closed the half with four straight points.

Northwestern kept the lead in double digits for the entire second half, despite a few flurries by the Bulls. Buffalo cut the lead to 11 (45-34) with another three-pointer by Foster with 17:24 remaining.

Northwestern got the lead as high as 19 points (58-39) with 12:00 remaining. The Bulls made one last run, going on a 6-0 spurt to cut the lead to 68-57 with 4:03 remaining but the Wildcats got two free throws from Tavaras Hardy (21 points) and a clinching three-pointer by Winston Blake to pull away down the stretch.

Campbell had a monster game for Buffalo, matching his season-high with 23 points while adding five rebounds, five assists and four steals. Robert Brown (Oak Park, MI/Oak Park) added 15 points and nine rebounds for Buffalo while Jason Robinson had seven points, four assists and a career-high four blocked shots.
