Cardinals End Bulls StreakMUNCIE, IN - The University at Buffalo men's basketball team saw their two-game winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon, losing at Ball State 82-68 behind some big three-point shooting by the Cardinals. UB started the game controlling the tip and quickly finding Damien Foster (Buffalo, NY/Traditional) who hit a three-pointer seven seconds into the game for an early lead. The Bulls then maintained that lead early in the first half, leading by as many as seven points, 15-8, after a Mike McKie (Brooklyn, NY/Tilden) layup with 15:17 to play. Ball State fought back and used a 13-2 run to take the lead at 18-17 with 10:44 left in the half. Buffalo would stay close and trailed by one point, 23-22, after a Kerry Hendrickson (Brooklyn, NY/Tilden) three-pointer. The Bulls then hit a scoring drought, going seven full minutes without a point and the Cardinals used a 13-0 run over that time to go into the lockerroom with a 37-26 lead. Buffalo started the second half as quickly as the first, scoring the first five points of the half. Ball State would maintain their lead, and pushed it to ten points, 64-54, with 6:47 to play. UB then went on an 8-1 run, cutting the lead to just three-points. Alexei Vasiliev (St. Petersburg, Russia) started the run with a three-pointer and McKie followed with a jumper in the lane. After a Ball State free throw, Jon Kleidon (Oak Park, IL/River Forest) hit a huge three-pointer to make it a 65-62 game with five minutes to play. After a Foster three-point attempt to tie the game rimmed out, Ball State came down and hit a three-pointer of their own and then hit free throws down the stretch for the 82-68 final score. Buffalo (5-15, 3-8) was led by Nikolai Alexeev with a game-high 21 points
and nine rebounds. Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) had 19
points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals and Alexei Vasiliev
added 10 points. Ball State (12-7, 4-6) was led by Theron Smith with 20 points,
Duane Clements with 18 and Patrick Jackson with 17 points off the bench. One
of the biggest keys of the game was three-point shooting, where UB was 8-of-17
from beyond the arc and the Cardinals were 13-of-27. |
