Men's Basketball Falls To Bowling Green, 85-73BUFFALO, NY - Bowling Green's Keith McLeod scored 42 of BG's 85 points to lead the Falcons to an 85-73 victory over the University at Buffalo Bulls at Alumni Arena on Saturday night.
With the loss, the Bulls drop to 8-7 overall and 3-2 in the Mid-American Conference. Bowling Green improves to 13-1 overall and 3-0 in the MAC, extending its longest winning streak since the 1943-44 season to 12 games. The Bulls trailed by just two points at the half (37-35) but Bowling Green came out shooting, scoring 12 of the first 13 points to begin the second half and eventually took an 11-point lead with 11:02 remaining. The Bulls battled back, and cut the deficit to three points (63-60) at the 8:38 mark on a basket by senior Darcel Williams (Buffalo, NY/Traditional). However, McLeod knocked down one his game-high three trifectas on BG's following possession to put the Falcons up by six. After a layup by McLeod, Williams drained a three-pointer of his own to pull Buffalo within five points but that was as close as the Bulls would get. McLeod would add another seven points before the final buzzer to cap Bowling Green's best individual scoring performance since 1964, when Howard Komives put up 42 points against Western Michigan on January 11. McLeod, who had 18 points at the half, finished 11-of-25 shooting from the field and 17-of-18 from the free throw line. "I thought they played really hard, said Buffalo coach Reggie Witherspoon speaking about Bowling Green. " I think they sustained their level of intensity for the entire game. We had lows, we had lapses, we made runs. They (Bowling Green) kept attacking us the entire game. We could never get them fully on their heals. At times when we needed a quick stop they came out of it and scored." Buffalo had three players in double-figure scoring. Williams has 22 points, senior Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) finished with 18 points and freshman Turner Battle (Kernersville, NC/East Forsyth) collected 12 points. Williams also added 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season and senior Robert Brown (Detroit, MI/Oak Park) grabbed 11 boards to tie his season high. The Bulls were outrebounded by Bowling Green, 36-31. Buffalo hit 42.6% (23-of-54) its shots from the field and 72.4% (21-of-29) on the line while Bowling Green shot 50.0% from the floor (27-of-54) and 71.4% from the line (25-of-35). Buffalo will host Ohio at Alumni Arena on Tuesday, January 15 at 7 p.m. before traveling
to Marshall on Saturday, January 19, for an afternoon game (1 p.m.). |
