Men's Basketball Falls to Bowling GreenBOWLING GREEN, OH - Bowling Green was looking to start a new home-court winning streak after having their 20-game streak snapped four days ago by Central Michigan. Buffalo didn't want to make it easy for BGSU, but couldn't hang on as the Falcons used hot shooting in the second half for a 90-75 Mid-American Conference win. The game was a tough battle early on as the first half saw five ties and six lead changes between the two teams. UB came from behind to keep it close on a couple of occassions. Trailing 12-4 early, UB got two buckets in a row to cut the lead to four points. Len Matela got a jumper for the Falcons to push the lead back to six points, 14-8, with 11:44 to go in the half. Buffalo then got six-straight points, capped off by a three-pointer from Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) to tie the game at 14-14. Another three-pointer later on by Damien Foster (Buffalo, NY/Traditional) would tie the game at 21-21 before Bowling Green went on a 6-0 run to lead 27-21. The Falcons would lead by five points with 3:20 left in the half, but UB closed with an 8-4 run to go into the break down by one point, 35-34. Trailing by one point at halftime, the Bulls came out charging in the second half, opening with an 8-2 spurt in the first two minutes of the half to take a 42-37 lead. Robert Brown (Oak Park, MI/Oak Park) led the UB run, scoring six of the eight points. Bowling Green would tie the game on a three-point play by Brandon Pardon with 16:25 to go, but UB responded with a bucket by Davis Lawrence (Brooklyn, NY/New Utrecht) to lead by two. The teams then exchanged a pair of free throws and UB led 46-44 with 15:14 left in the game. Pardon would come through for the Falcons, hitting three-pointers on consecutive possessions to give Bowling Green a lead it would not relinquish. Those two three's by Pardon also ignited a 13-2 run by the Falcons over the next three and a half minutes for a nine-point lead with 11:31 to play. The Bulls would cut the lead to six, 59-53, with 10:21 remaining, but that was as close as they could get the rest of the way. An 8-0 BGSU run at that point would extend the lead to 14 points with seven and a half minutes to play. Bowling Green would hit 10-of-12 free throws in the last two minutes, accounting for all the Falcons points over that span, to hold on for a 90-75 win. "I thought both teams played hard. The difference was the rebounding, especially in the first half," said head coach Reggie Witherspoon. "That rebounding difference really put us in a hole. It helped them establish themselves effort wise in being aggressive inside. We've had some new challenges come up every night out there, but we are still seeing progress on the court and we played a little better tonight." Len Matela led Bowling Green with game-highs of 23 points and 13 rebounds. Trent Jackson added 20 points for the Falcons, who hit 70.8% (17-of-24) from the field in the second half and 54.2% (32-of-59) for the game. Louis Campbell led Buffalo with 20 points and six assists while RobertBrown had 16 points and seven rebounds and Damien Foster added 15 points. Buffalo falls to 2-9 on the season and 0-4 in the Mid-American Conference
heading into Saturday's game at Central Michigan. The Chippewas are 7-4
overall and 1-1 in the MAC following a 73-61 loss at Miami earlier this
evening. |
