Bowling Green Holds on to Defeat UB

Bulls Second Half Rally Falls Short

BUFFALO, NY - There appeared to be two different teams on the court for the University at Buffalo Saturday night, one that let the visiting Falcons of Bowling Green jump out to a 24-2 lead to start the game and another that rallied in the second half from 28 points down to get within four before eventually falling short and losing to Bowling Green 96-90.

The Bulls trailed 46-33 at the half, and fell down by as many as 28 points, 76-48, with nine minutes left in the game. UB would then use a 24-6 run over the next five minutes to cut into the Falcons lead. Kerry Hendrickson (Brooklyn, NY/Tilden) came off the bench to score ten points during that run, including two three-pointers. The Bulls outscored Bowling Green 42-20 in the last nine minutes of the game but could not overcome clutch free throw shooting by the Falcons.

Bowling Green hit 20-of-21 free throws in the second half, including 14-of-15 in the last five minutes to help hold off the UB rally. The Falcons scored their last 10 points of the game from the line as the Bulls had to foul to stop the clock. The one missed free throw for BGSU in the half was followed by a jumper by Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) with 0:46 left, cutting the Falcons lead to just four points, 90-86, the closest UB got since BGSU led 6-2 early in the first half. Two free throws by Bowling Green were followed by two from UB's Mike McKie (Brooklyn, NY/Tilden) to make it 92-88 with 30-seconds left. The Falcons Dave Esterkamp hit two more free throws to push the lead to six before Louis Campbell answered with another running jumper, cutting the lead to four again at 94-90 with 0:19 remaining. Two more Falcons free throws secured the Bowling Green win at 96-90.

The Bulls used tremendous shooting in their second half comeback, hitting 61.8% (21-of-34) from the field in the last twenty minutes. UB pounded the ball inside more in the second half as well, with the two UB big men, Nikolai Alexeev (Minsk, Belarus) and Mike McKie combining for 17 second half points compared to just seven combined points in the first half.

UB (2-11, 0-4) was led by Kerry Hendrickson with a career-high 17 points off the bench, all coming in the second half and 14 of those points coming in the last eight minutes of the game to help lead UB's charge. Mike McKie added 16 points inside and Rick Fox (Toledo, OH/St. Frances DeSales) and Louis Campbell had 15 points each. Dave Esterkamp led the Falcons (11-2, 3-0) with a game-high 21 points and Anthony Stacey and Len Matela had 19 each.
