Bulls Fall in Overtime, Again

Akron Defeats UB 75-65 in Overtime

BUFFALO, NY - For the third time this season, and the second time in as many games, the UB men's basketball team lost in overtime, falling 75-65 to visiting Akron. UB was coming off an overtime loss at MAC foe Marshall just four days ago as the Bulls fell to 0-2 in the MAC and 2-7 overall with the loss.

The game was tied 61-61 after regulation, and Akron (4-6, 1-0) scored the last ten points in overtime to come away with the win. The only Buffalo (2-7, 0-2) points in the extra period came off a pair of free throws by both Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) and Jason Robinson (Seattle, WA/Curtis). The two by Robinson would tie the game at 65-65 with 2:51 to play when Akron made its final run. A three-pointer by David Falknor at the 2:27 mark gave the Zips the lead for good. The Zips hit 7-of-8 from the line in the last minute and a half to seal the win.

Early in the second half, Akron had cut an eight-point halftime lead for the Bulls to three points before UB extended the lead. The Bulls went on a 12-5 run to extend the lead, sparked by Robinson who had five of the 12 points over that run. UB then held an 11-point lead before the Zips used a strong second half comeback to force the overtime period. The Bulls had their largest lead at 58-47 with four minutes to play, but could not hold on for the win. Akron would close the game with a 14-3 run, limiting UB to a free throw and a layup by Robert Brown (Oak Park, MI/Oak Park) with two and a half minutes to play in regulation. The Bulls still held a two-point lead with a minute to go, but a steal and breakaway layup by Akron's Rashon Brown tied the game and sent it to overtime.

The first half saw both teams take nine-point leads, the first by Akron early on as the Zips led 18-9 at the 9:59 mark. At that point, the Bulls went on a 14-0 run and took a five-point lead of their own at 23-18 with 5:41 left in the half. Over that run, Damien Foster (Buffalo, NY/Traditional) hit two three-pointers and Robinson scored seven points to lead the Bulls run. A layup by Foster at the 2:50 mark gave UB a nine-point lead at 31-22 and the Bulls would take a 35-27 lead going into halftime.

Nate Schindewolf led Akron with a game-high 24 points, including 9-of-10 from the free throw line while Jason Robinson led UB with a career-high 23 points in the loss. Damien Foster chipped in 17 points for the Bulls and Robert Brown added 15 points. Robinson also finished with a game-high seven rebounds.

Buffalo falls to 2-7 on the season and 0-2 in the MAC heading into a three- game road stretch. UB will travel to play at Northern Illinois on Saturday, January 6, before heading to play at Bowling Green on January 10 and at Central Michigan on January 13.
