UB Wins In Double OvertimeMANHATTAN, NY - UB won a thrilling double-overtime game at Manhattan on Tuesday night, defeating the Jaspers 68-66 in a game that took two extra five-minute overtime periods to decide. Sophomore Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) followed his own miss and tipped it in with 1:16 left in the game, giving UB a 68-66 lead and providing the winning basket. The Bulls outscored the Jaspers 4-2 in the second overtime period. Tied at 64-64 after the first overtime, the Bulls Alexei Vasiliev (St. Petersburg, Russia/Russian Junior National) converted a fast break layup with 4:20 left to give UB a two-point led before Manhattan tied it at 66-66. Tied at 59-59 after regulation, both teams scored five points in the first overtime. Campbell converted on a layup and hit one of two free throws with under a minute left, but the Jaspers Alvin Anderson hit a last second three- pointer to send the game into double overtime. UB had a chance to win in regulation as well, but could not convert on a couple free throws and missed a last second three-pointer that would have won the game. Leading 33-32 at halftime, the Bulls got behind early before finally taking the lead with five minutes left in the half on a three-pointer by Vasiliev. The Bulls led by as many as six, 33-27, before a late run by the Jaspers cut the halftime lead to one, 33-32. The game went back and forth in the second half, with Manhattan leading most of the way. UB was down by as many as seven points, 57-50, with 6:49 remaining, but the Bulls charged back, closing regulation with a 9-2 run to force the extra periods. The Bulls (3-2) were led by Louis Campbell who scored a team season-high 22 points in the game and a career-high eight rebounds. Nikolai Alexeev (Minsk, Belarus/Belarus Sports Academy) had a career high with 16 points and eight rebounds. Alexeev was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line. Alexei Vasiliev added 15 points, including 10 straight points for UB during a three-minute stretch to keep the Bulls in the game. Maliso Libomi (Malikoff, France/Academie De Creteil) contributed with 10 points, all coming in the first half. Nate Johnson (O’Fallon, IL/O’Fallon) contributed with eight rebounds as well and Ryan Peterson (Clark, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) dished out six assists. |
