Chippewas Use Big Start To Bounce Bulls

Manciel scores 22 points and CMU shoots 53% from field to keep UB winless in MAC

BUFFALO, NY -Freshman forward Mike Manciel scored 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds and Central Michigan used a big start out of the gate to defeat the University at Buffalo, 79-70, in a Mid-American Conference game at Alumni Arena.

Manciel hit 9-of-16 shots from the field, including eight points in the first 11 minutes as the Chippewas (8-9, 5-4) raced to a 24-10 lead with 9:02 left in the first half. The Bulls (4-16, 0-9) bounced back behind the torrid shooting of freshman Koran Godwin (Roselle, NJ/Abraham Clark). Godwin scored 12 points in five minutes of first-half action to pull Buffalo to within 35-32 at intermission.

The Chippewas responded in the second half as they took a 62-48 lead on a layup by Dan Schell with 8:00 left in regulation. The Bulls would again cut into the lead by going on a 14-7 run to cut the lead to 69-62 with 4:32 left. The Chippewas were able to hold on down the stretch despite hitting just 20-of-37 free throws in the contest.

Tim Kisner and Schell were also in double figures for CMU with 12 points apiece. Buffalo was led by Godwin's career-high 26 points while Will Campbell (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) had his fourth double-double of the season and second in a row with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Louis Campbell (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) added 12 points and eight rebounds for Buffalo while Nate Johnson (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon) had seven rebounds off the bench.

Buffalo will travel to Northern Illinois (Thursday) and Western Michigan (Saturday) next week while Central Michigan hosts Toledo on Wednesday.
