Bonnies Hold Off Late Bulls' RallyBUFFALO, NY - David Messiah Capers and J.R. Bremer each scored 16 points and St. Bonaventure held off a late Buffalo rally to score a 61-53 win before 2,457 fans in their first trip ever to Alumni Arena. Capers hit 7-of-11 shots from the field and the Bonnies outrebounded UB, 46-39, including 21 offensive rebounds, to improve to 8-9 overall in the non- conference game. The Bulls fell to 4-14 overall. The Bonnies led 33-29 with 16:55 left in regulation before going on a 15-3 run to take a 48-32 lead on a three-point field goal by Bremer with 10:02 remaining. The lead was 50-35 before the Bulls would go on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 50-44 on a layup by Louis Campbell, who finished with 12 points. The Bulls got as close as 54-50 with 2:22 remaining on a dunk by Campbell, but Bona's Caswell Cyrus (12 points, 11 rebounds) put back a dunk off an offensive rebound to restore the lead. The Bulls would again cut the lead to four at 57-53 on a three-pointer by Nikolai Alexeev (team-high 14 points) but two free throws by Bremer with :28 left put the game away. The Bonnies held a 31-24 advantage at halftime on the strength of 10 first-half points by Capers. Tim Winn, St. Bonaventure's leading scorer, was held without a point on 0-for-10 shooting but did contribute six assists, four steals and five rebounds. Maliso Libomi added 11 points and six rebounds for Buffalo while Alex Vasiliev had six points, five assists and four steals. Buffalo will host Ball State on Thursday night at Alumni Arena as they resume Mid-American Conference play. |
