Bulls Topple First-Place Penguins, 72-57

Seniors Young, Clemens and Martinho power UB to win

The University at Buffalo Bulls defeated the first-place Youngstown State Penguins 72-57 Saturday evening (2/14) in Alumni Arena, raising their record to 13-10 overall and 8-5 in Mid-Continent Conference play. Youngstown State falls to 17-6 overall, 10-3 in the Mid-Con, and into a tie for first with Valparaiso who is also 10-3 in the conference.

Photo of Rasaun Young After spotting the Bulls an early 7-0 lead, the Penguins responded with an 8-0 run to grab an 8-7 lead with just over eight minutes gone. Senior forward Willie Spellman was the high man for Youngstown State in the first half with six points, including six of their first 10. UB recaptured the lead when senior guard Mike Martinho scored two of his 14 points for an 11-10 advantage midway through the first half. The Bulls led by as many as nine points before YSU's Maurice Anderson sank a three-pointer with 3:28 left in the period cutting Buffalo's lead to three at 23-20. However after both teams traded baskets in the waning moments of the half, a layup by forward Robert Harris with :43 seconds left gave UB a 29-24 lead at the intermission. Youngstown State shot 41.7% (10-of-24) in the first half while the Bulls connected on 11 of their 25 attempts.

The Penguins quickly erased UB's five-point halftime lead when junior guard Devon Lewis scored five points in the first 1:12 of the second period to knot the score at 29 all. Both teams would trade baskets for the next seven minutes with Youngstown State taking the lead on three different occasions during that span, including 40-38 with 13:42 left to play. With the score tied at 42-42 with 12:15 remaining, the Bulls would go on a 16-5 run in the next four minutes to take an 11-point lead at 58-47. YSU's senior guard Anthony Hunt responded with a jumper, cutting UB's lead to nine at 58-49, but that's as close the Penguins would get as the Bulls would go on a 14-8 run to close out the game and earn the 72-57 win. Youngstown State shot 44.9% (22-of-49) for the game and was led by Hunt with 12 points, while freshman center David Brown had nine points and seven rebounds in the losing cause. UB shot 47.1% (24-of-51) for the game with senior Rasaun Young leading all scorers with 17 points, while senior swingman Matt Clemens was in double figures for the second straight game with 14 points.

The Bulls now hit the road for a pair of games at Western Illinois on Thursday (2/19) and UMKC on Saturday (2/21), before wrapping up the regular season at home on Saturday, February 24 against Chicago State.
