Valparaiso Downs Bulls, 73-64

Crusaders earn sixth straight win over UB

The University at Buffalo Bulls fell 73-64 on Wednesday (2/11) night to the Valparaiso Crusaders before 3,366 fans in Alumni Arena. The loss, UB's fifth straight to Valpo, drops them to 12-10, 7-5 in Mid-Continent Conference play while the Crusaders improve to 15-9 and 10-3 in league play. The Bulls have not beaten Valparaiso since the 1994-95 season when they scored a 90-85 victory in Alumni Arena during their first season in the Mid-Con.

Photo of Matt Clemens Valparaiso came out firing early on, grabbing an 18-2 lead with two free throws by senior Scott McMillin (Wichita, KS/Bishop Carroll) the only points for the Bulls until 14:38 when junior Robert Harris (New Rochelle, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) scored a layup off one of freshman guard Ryan Peterson's (Clark, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) 10 assists. However, UB was unable to get any closer than eight points before the break, with the Crusaders taking a 34-24 lead into the half. UB shot only 37% (10-of-27) while Valpo connected on 13 of their their 31 attempts (41.9%), including 6-of-9 from three-point range.

UB narrowed the lead to 37-29 early in the second half when senior swingman Matt Clemens (Cleveland, OH/St. Edwards) scored two of his game- and career-high 22 points. However, that's as close as the Bulls would get as the Crusaders' defense controlled UB's Mike Martinho (Rahway. NJ/Union Catholic) and Rasaun Young (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle), allowing them to score only seven and 12 points respectively. Valpo star Bryce Drew was also a non-factor, scoring only nine points, however senior forward Bill Jenkins and senior center Zoran Viskovic combined for 13 and 16 points to lead the Crusaders.

The Bulls wrap up their three-game homestand on Saturday (2/14) night when they host Mid-Con rival Youngstown State in Alumni Arena at 8:20 pm.
