Kangaroos Shoot Down Bulls

The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Kangaroos shot a blistering 60.4% (32-of-53) and had five players score in double figures as they defeated the UB Bulls 81-67 Wednesday night (1/21) in Alumni Arena. The Kangaroos improved to 5-13 overall, 3-5 in Mid-Continent Conference play, while the Bulls fell to 9-8 overall, 5-3 in the Mid-Con. After starting the season 5-0 in the conference, UB has now dropped three straight Mid-Con games - the first time since the 1995-96 season.

Photo of Tim CohaneAlthough the Bulls took an early 2-0 lead, UMKC went on a 10-0 run with 9:58 remaining in the first half to open a 17-point lead which they would not relinquish. The Kangaroos hit on 18 of their 33 (54.5%) first half field goal attempts, led by senior guard Anthony Perry's 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting. The Bulls, who were plagued by poor-shooting the entire game, shot a lowly 30.8% (8-of-26) and faced a 17-point deficit at the half.

UMKC's hot-shooting continued after the intermission as they connected on 70% (14-of-20) of their second half shots, while the Bulls were good on only 40% (14-of-35) of their field goals. Despite their cold shooting, UB went on a went on an 8-0 run with 13:41 left to play, including two three-pointers by senior guard Mike Martinho (Rahway, NJ/Union Catholic), cutting the Kangaroo lead to 10 at 54-44. That's as close as the Bulls would get however, as UMKC responded with an 8-0 run of their own to push the lead back to 18. Junior guard Eddie Smith, who led UMKC with 14 points and five assists, was one of five Kangaroo players to score in double figures. Senior swingman Rasaun Young (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) led UB with 22 points, Martinho added 17 points and freshman center Nikolai Alexeev (Minsk, Belarus/Belarus Sports Academy) had 10 points and six blocked shots in the loss.

The Bulls return to action on Saturday (1/24) when they host conference rival Western Illinois in Alumni Arena at 8:15 pm.
