Bulls Outshoot Yellowjackets in Wild Affair

Martinho sets school record with 44 points; ties own record with 10 threes

Photo of Mike Martinho The University at Buffalo Bulls defeated the University of Rochester Yellowjackets on Tuesday (2/3) evening in Alumni Arena, 104-75 in a non-conference game. The Bulls (12-9/7-4) were led by senior Mike Martinho (Rahway, NJ/Union Catholic) who set a school record with 44 points, eclipsing the previous mark of 41 set by former UB star Jim Horne during the 1954-55 season, and tied his own school record of 10 three-point field goals set against Troy State during the 1995-96 season. For the game, Martinho scored 44 points on 14-of-20 (70%) shooting, including 10-of-14 (71%) from beyond the arc, grabbed seven rebounds and had scored 31 points at the break. The Yellowjackets set a team record with 15 three-point field goals, breaking the old mark of 13 set in 1994 against Hamilton College and again this season at Carnegie Mellon.

The first half saw the Bulls jump out to a 28-11 lead following a Martinho three at the 12:12 mark. The Yellowjackets (8-10) however, charged back however, going on a 23-6 run to tie the game at 34 with 6:37 remaining in the half. During that span, Rochester made eight straight shots, including six three-pointers, to pull even. However UB responded with a run of their own, hitting four shots to take a nine-point 51-42 lead at the break. Both teams scorched the nets in the first half with Buffalo hitting on 63% (17-of-27) of their shots, while the Yellowjackets were good on 55.6% (15-of-27) of their field goals.

The second half saw the Bulls continue their torrid shooting as they slowly pulled away from the smaller Yellowjackets. Buffalo doubled their halftime lead at the 10:52 mark when freshman guard Ryan Peterson (Clark NJ/Seton Hall Prep), seeing his first action in two games due to a sprained ankle, drilled a trey from the corner for a 71-53 advantage. Rochester, who had stayed in the game because of their hot-shooting first half, cooled-off considerably in the second half, connecting on only 11-of-34 shots (32.4%). With :14 second left to play, Peterson dished to Martinho who drained a three-pointer from the top of the key for the record-breaking points. Senior guard Dave Sickler led Rochester with 25 points, while senior guard Jason Leone added 17.

The Bulls continue their three-game homestand next Wednesday when they face conference rival Valparaiso in Alumni Arena at 7:50 pm.
